Home Studio 2004 Frequently Asked Questions

General Information

Can Home Studio 2004 open my old .WRK and .BUN files?

Yes, Home Studio 2004 can open any Cakewalk-authored .WRK, .BUN, and .MID files.

Cakewalk will not open or freezes when you press the icon for it.

Follow these steps to see which one is causing the problem:

1. If you have the All-In-Wonder card on your system. Then disable the audio portion of it in Windows and then try Cakewalk. This can be done under Start | Settings | Control Panels | Sounds and Audio Devices | Hardware. Then, click on the ATI audio or Rage Theater Driver, choose Properties and select Do Not Use This Device (disable) at the bottom.

2. Please uninstall all non-Cakewalk audio plug-ins, or at least any Steinberg/Prosoniq ones. You'll see these plug-ins listed under Control Panel | Add/Remove Software and select the Plug-ins. Uninstall the FX plug-ins in this window, then restart Windows.

3. If that doesn't work, I suggest that you disable the "Voxware Audio Tookit" audio compression module. You'll find this under Control Panel | Multimedia | Devices tab. Click the plus-sign next to Audio Compression CODECS. Select the Voxware Audio Tookit and click Properties. Select Do Not Use in this screen and click OK. Restart Windows.

4. Locate and rename a file called AVICAP32.DLL to AVICAP32.OLD, then restart Windows.

5. If the problem contiues, then download and install the latest drivers from your soundcard manufacturer's website, or if you have the latest drivers, reinstall the ones that you have. Then, delete the files AUD.INI and TTSSEQ.INI located in your Cakewalk folder on your hard drive.

6. Try this:

a) Completely un-install Cakewalk from your computer. This is normally done from Start | Programs | Cakewalk. This will not remove any of your files or audio data.

b) To make sure nothing else is running while reinstalling Cakewalk in step 'e', choose Start | Run and type MSCONFIG. Click OK, choose Selective Startup, then uncheck the Load Startup Group Items box. Click OK, and restart Windows. You can always recheck that box at a later time. In Win 2000, click Ctrl+Alt+Del and manually End Task on the items you don't need running. Restart your computer.

c) Click the Windows Start button and select Run. At the prompt type REGEDIT and click OK.
Backup your Registry before making edits - you do this by clicking the Registry menu, Export Registry File.
Now delete the following Registry keys
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cakewalk Music Software
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Cakewalk Music Software

Please note that this will remove any effects presets and key bindings you may have made in Cakewalk. You can back up those registry keys separately if you like.

d) Delete the files AUD.INI and TTSSEQ.INI from the Cakewalk program folder.

e) Restart your computer, then reinstall Cakewalk.

I hear an echo while recording audio, how can I stop this?

Under Options | Audio | Input Monitoring, unselect all of the drivers. Then, double click on the yellow speaker icon on the bottom right corner of your screen (or choose Start | Programs | Accessories | Multimedia | Volume Control). Then choose Options | Properties | Adjust Volume For Playback, and make sure all boxes below are checked. Click OK. Make sure the Mute Box is NOT checked under Line or MIC Balance and adjust the level. Close it and try again

How can I eliminate 'Dropout'?

If SONAR suddenly stops producing audio during recording or playback followed by the appearance of a red dropout indicator light, you've very likely experienced a dropout. Sometimes instead of a dropout, you may experience a stutter during playback (a small section of audio repeats itself once or twice before normal playback resumes). Or, you may occasionally experience a glitch or pop during audio playback (a brief interruption or clicking noise is heard, but audio playback then continues normally from that point).

Eliminating Dropouts

  1. Complete all the steps listed in the SONAR Help file under the category Dropouts and Other Audio Problems.
  2. There may be a bad setting in the AUD.INI file. Try one of the following methods:
    Easy Method
    - Close SONAR and delete the AUD.INI file from the SONAR folder. After restarting SONAR you may need to point the app to your WaveData folder. (Options | Audio | Advanced Tab | Data Directory field)
Advanced Method - Close SONAR. Open SONAR's AUD.INI file in Notepad. Delete everything listed beneath the line PictureDir=C:\Cakewalk Projects\Picture Cache
Save the file and restart SONAR.
  3. Go to Options | Audio | General and move the Latency slider toward the Safe setting.
  4. Click on the Advanced tab and set the I/O Buffer Size to 256.
  5. Open a file that has this problem and run the Tools | Compact Audio Data command.
  6. Make sure nothing else is running while SONAR is open. Choose Start | Run and type MSCONFIG. Click OK, then click on the Startup tab at the upper right of the window that opens. Uncheck all items listed, click OK, then restart your computer. You can always recheck those items again at a later time.
  7. If, and only if, you have an UltraDMA hard drive, make sure it's in DMA mode. Go to Control Panel | System | Device Manager and click the plus next to Disk Drives. Double click on your hard drive, click Settings, and make sure the DMA box is checked. If it is not, check it, restart, and make sure it stays checked.
